This post is especially dedicated to my English-speaking friends, as I have a lot around the world who are keen on reading. I told you in advance that the month of June would be full of good news, and here I am with another surprise! The novel I’m going to present to you today is far from being recent. In literature “old” and “new” are categories I don’t want to spend too much time on, as they are more relevant to the commercial side of the editorial world.

I’m talking about my historical novel

The Painter of Angels
and my decision to put it on Amazon, in the double version (paper and digital) with a brand new cover.

The Painter of Angels has always been a self-published book: it was originally printed by a printing house in Milan, then it came out on ilmiolibro.it and finally on lulu. In short, it has led a somewhat challenging life. I tried to promote it, but in vain; perhaps I didn’t use the right channels or work hard enough. In conclusion, it has always been like a son who never manages to get married. His parents prefer to keep him home instead of giving him to a small publishing house (that is to say: a printing house) or, even worse, a vanity press, which would not treat him with the due care, or might even ill-treat him. I’m not going to bore you (and myself) with further considerations on this matter, as they have been widely debated elsewhere.

In spite of the fact it has never drawn the attention of any proper “suitor”, The Painter of Angels is a novel that has always given me great satisfaction, both in terms of my readers’ feedback and reception from the public, every time I presented it. I don’t know if the title is particularly appealing or if any alchemy takes place, but the feedback has always been great. If I were to be remembered for this novel alone, I would be very happy indeed.

As the book deserved a new look, I thought of involving Fabio Gialain, the designer who created the wonderful covers for the books in my cycle on the First Crusade. Fabio actually prepared two versions: one for the Italian edition (see link), and this one for the English edition. As you can see, it is entirely different because the background picture with Venice is universally known. I thank him very much for the time he has spent on this task: he’s a true friend, as well as a lovely work colleague. You can contact him su LinkedIn or write me to the mail you can find on “Guest post e altro”.

I also thank Maria Teresa Steri, administrator of the blog Anima di Carta, who prepared her guide to publishing on CreateSpace and wrote posts on how to edit and publish an ebook on Amazon. She gave me a lot of suggestions and also helped me with the files. Maria Teresa is a special person in many ways. It seems to me that I have known her for a long time, and meeting a person like her has been a precious gift, in a world where people continuously struggle, convinced as they are to be the reincarnation of Boris Pasternak. The competition among opportunists, people who always take and never give, is the rule. I take this opportunity to remind that Maria Teresa is the author of the esoteric novel Bagliori nel buio (more details on her blog).

And now let us talk about the translator! The English translation was carried out by Juliet Bates, another true friend of mine. She recently translated the historical novel by Stella Stollo, I Delitti della Primavera (The Botticelli Killings) and she is currently working on the translation of another novel. Juliet gave me invaluable suggestions during the translation process, as if she were my editor. If you read the first pages of The Painter of Angels, you will see that her translation is top-quality. If you’re interested in her translating, from Italian to English, or her editing skills, write to my mail in ‘Guest post and Various’ and I’ll put you in contact with her.

Very little remains to be said but to give you the Amazon links where you can order or download the novel, if you wish to do so:

Here you can find the blog page with the synopsis and a short extract, which is all the information on offer to make the book’s acquaintance.
